High Tea … When we were being highfalutin and dining at Rockpool this week we noticed that the Crown Metropol Lobby Lounge had started serving high tea. We booked, which is mandatory apparently, and went along with high expectations.

After a shaky start with staff, we were seated. It was explained that opting for champagne meant no tea or coffee was included. High Tea with no tea? Bizarre. But we persevered and had champagne, a very nice French sparkling, Veuve Tailhan. Feeling calm and contented we awaited the food.

And, when the “tower” arrived, we were in awe. A traditional high tea with sandwiches, scones, jam and cream and petit fours but it all looked mouth-wateringly good.

The sandwiches had three stand outs; the cucumber with cream cheese and wafer thin onions, the egg with aioli mayonnaise and the smoked salmon, also with wafer thin onions. There was a ham sandwich, which we didn’t try.

Delish

The scones were pleasant and contained fruit, the jam was house-made and the cream was wonderful.

The petit fours had three stand outs; the chocolate éclair with chocolate patisserie crème, the chocolate brownie with a ganache topping and walnuts, and the small mousse (in it’s own container) with a jelly layer and white ganache, and also tiny malteaser balls along the top. These three desserts are worth going back for alone. The food was delectable.

The tables and chairs aren’t really meant for dining, more for having a drink, i.e. A bar. The staff member who served us was very pleasant and good at her job. Not sure if it’s the right venue for this type of dining but the food is very, very good.
