Upmarket Indian … Used to frequent the Royal India quite often but a long time ago now. We decided a revisit was in order. I noticed that they offered a Thali lunch special, so the deal was done.

Royal India Restaurant and Bar

The restaurant is very pleasant looking from the outside. So we felt happy with our venue choice straight away. On entering the restaurant we walked through the bar area. The feel of the place was light and airy, with some scattered high tables and chairs. On approaching the reception desk we were greeted with a smile and shown to a table promptly.

The friendly waiter offered water and menus. He also returned to present us with a complimentary basket of papadums. And, two dipping chutneys, a mint and a tamarind one, pretty sure. We felt spoilt by the good quality of the food.

We both ordered the vegetarian Thali. These consisted of four curries, rice, naan and a dessert. The naan bread was delicious and glistening with EVOO. The curries ranged in spiciness from mild to extra hot. There was a Dahl Makhani, an Aloo Gobhi, a Brinjal Baingan and a Paneer Jalfrezi. My favourite was the Brinjal because it was spicy and had a nice heat to it.

Forgot to mention that the Thali also came with a small Gulab Jamon. A great little dessert made from flour and rose flavoured syrup, a bit like a dumpling. Very sweet but deliciously so. One of my absolute favourite desserts at any time.

The food overall was excellent. The service was really friendly and the atmosphere was good too. It was all the little details which made for a very pleasant visit. We are already planning to return soon.
