Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now … I’m sure even Morrissey would have had a few words to say about this meal. In his eloquent fashion he possibly would have likened it to a vaudevillian melodrama. Me? I’m just going to tell the truth.
We headed to the new sister cafe of the Mary Street Bakery in Highgate. This cafe sits on Railway Parade in West Leederville. Joining a small elite bunch of cafes on this fairly new strip.
It was a hellish hot day and a special celebration with the family. The first thing we noticed was the flies. They were everywhere. A little swarm zooming at us randomly. Certainly a hard thing for staff to do something about. But the staff didn’t seem bothered.
Ordered my benchmark cappuccino. It was tasteless. Which I found ironic because the colour of the coffee was quite dark. It just didn’t taste like it had any coffee in it.
Xena and I had been wanting to try the Fried Buttermilk Chicken Pancakes for a while. Possibly because there were so many good reviews of the Mary Street Bakery Highgate’s version of this dish. So we decided to share, as we were told it was an enormous serving.
What was presented to us looked the part definitely.
And, then I started to eat. First discovery, the very thick pancake was not cooked in the middle. Raw pancake mix was on show, which the others at the table mistook for Cheese. Luckily, the edges were cooked so I ate those but the egg was a disaster and the chicken was chewy and overcooked. I think it had probably been sitting in a bain-marie or something. It was really salty and tough.
The maple syrup with the chilli flakes was fine.
Xena, who had half this same dish, enjoyed her Chicken. Unluckily, I must have been given the not so tasty pieces.
Ah, I hate giving bad reviews because it always makes me feel kind of queasy.
These could just be teething problems. Perhaps a revisit in a few months might find a different story.
Just a brief mention of the pistachio donut we shared. This was an outstanding donut. Really big with a generous sprinkle of pistachios. Fresh baked and fab.
