Sporty Burgers … Varsity Burgers is the baby sister of the Varsity Bar in Nedlands. The Nedlands bar is a rowdy sports bar that happens to sell burgers. The Northbridge burger bar is situated right next to a rowdy sports bar. And, that is not by chance.
Varsity Burgers is a bit of a hole in the wall and is bringing new life to a laneway known as “Lion Walk”. Really like the vibe in this laneway. So far, there is only one other café in residence but the potential is there for a new cafe strip.
Lion Walk runs parallel to busy William Street and sits right next to The Game Sports Bar, formerly the Aberdeen Hotel. A cavernous Heritage Listed building built in 1886. The link between the two? Staff at the Sports Bar will take your Varsity Burger orders and deliver the food to your table at the Sports Bar.
Varsity Burgers has been on my wish list for a while now. It was great to finally get there to sample the food.
This is your typical burger bar, pay at the counter and wait for your food. We had to buy water but that was expected. Staff were friendly and the food came out quite quickly. An achievement as there had been a queue to order.
Food arrives in take away boxes made of recycled materials. As is the cutlery. Our Buccaneer Burger of grilled jerk chicken breast, pineapple, tomato, lettuce and ranch dressing was wrapped in a Brioche Bun.
Haven’t had pineapple on a burger for a long time but it was a great addition to the flavours. The jerk chicken was not spicy but it tasted great, really tender and juicy from the marinade. Everything was so fresh, yum. The ranch dressing was delicious, Xena googled and discovered it is made from buttermilk. Oh, those calories.
The chips were beer battered, really crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. This was a fab plate of food.
We will definitely be visiting the Varsity Bar in Nedlands to pay homage to the Mother Ship at some point in the future.
