A Passion for BBQ … Porkies BBQ in Bayswater had me at hello. The space is decorated with outdoor furniture, the napkins are red with white checks and the food is cooked on a BBQ. Seems like we’d accidentally stepped into someone’s backyard and they were cooking up some great smelling food.
Well, either that or we’d discovered the enormous café on the corner of Grand Prom and Railway Parade.
There are not a lot of places to eat around this café. It sits on it’s own, right next to Meltham Railway Station, in a residential area. Probably the locals wouldn’t mind keeping this place to themselves.
Noteworthy is the fact that it was Tuesday night and the place was packed. Though we did manage to get a table without being delegated to the Pig Pen.
Really friendly staff explained how to order. Pay at the counter then visit the Water and Cutlery station. Condiments are on the table.
We both ordered a Chicken Sandwich. This was actually a meal with a container of Corn Slaw, Chips and the chicken in a bun. Oh, and a dill pickle. And, all inclusive at a cost of $15.50 each.
We ordered a small side of Mac and Cheese, which was deep fried, of course. A great side dish that was gooey, cheesy and possibly just about perfect.
The place has a sports bar vibe and is BYO only. There are televisions all around the large room and they’re all tuned into the Sports Channel but muted.
Not a sports fan but the place felt comfortable and homey. There were families, friends and couples all digging into their BBQ.
But I digress, back to the sandwich. The chicken was sliced thin and smothered in Porkies BBQ sauce. And, it was delicious, juicy and flavoursome with a smoky tang. It turned out that the Corn Slaw was coleslaw but with corn kernels and it was yum.
So, we couldn’t eat everything but we wanted to. We’ll be back because a return visit is an absolute necessity.
