Laid Back … These two little words would be a good way to describe Five Bar in Mount Lawley. It is a comfortable environment and the welcome on entering the bar is five star. From the crew who brought us 399 Bar in Northbridge.

Xena and I ventured into the venue on a rainy Sunday afternoon. We didn’t know what to expect but were surprised by the leather sofas, high tables, lamps and chandeliers. It’s a very large space divided up by wrought iron panelling and a large wooden Bar.

Their wine list is extravagant and choices were hard to make. But Xena’s cold warranted a Hurricane Pimms with loads of ginger and lemon. While the Julia & Navinez Cava (Barcelona) came recommended as a superior dry fizz. Who could refuse and every sip was savoured.

We ordered two burgers to share, a Fried Prawn Po-Boy with Coleslaw, tomato and Spicy Mayo. And, a Spicy Fried Chicken Burger with Asian Slaw and Miso Chilli Ketchup. We were happy to be out of the house after the storms over the last few days and Five Bar was cosy and inviting.

The food was a lot smaller than we imagined it would be but the tastes were all in place. The Po-Boy stood out with the wonderful dressing on the Slaw and the juicy, chewy prawns.

Coming in a close second was the Chicken Burger with an understated dressing and tender, crispy chicken.

So, we couldn’t fault the food or the service. The venue is worth visiting just to take in the décor. I’ve seen small pieces of Five Bar decor at a couple of other venues. Take heart, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
