Rock Lobster … Mister Gills opened about four weeks ago now so the time was right to pay a visit. The café is the brainchild of Murray Gills the co-owner of popular Subiaco Café Juanita’s.
I’d read that the Chef had done time at Rockpool and Noma so I was expecting big things from the food.
Arrived a little early for lunch but they had the hatch open and were serving coffee and toasted sandwiches. So, I sat and read the lunch menu for a while at a nice table on the pavement.
Ordered one lobster slider on a brioche bun with celery mayo and cos lettuce. There were shiny splashes of EVOO around the plate and the bun had been toasted and seasoned. Yum.
Biting into the soft bun, chewy lobster and crunchy lettuce was a pretty great experience. Mainly because those simple flavours and textures were amazing making this dish something I would return to eat. Oh yeah.
Also ordered a Fish Taco with cos, chipotle mayo, pickled shallots and coriander. They had also added fresh chillies and a slice of lime which was a nice touch.
Loved the taco because of the flavours but the fish itself was perfectly cooked, white and thick and made this dish pretty special. The fresh chilli did me in as it was a little too hot for me and it made me think that Xena would probably wolf it down.
So, there is wine by the glass and cocktails from what I could gather. Didn’t actually see a wine list but there’s always next time for a tipple.
