La Calabria Traditional Italian, Dog Swamp Shopping Centre, Yokine, Phone 9201 1880.
Let’s Go To The Mall … So, shopping centre cafes are a thing now. A little lost cluster of shops in Dog Swamp, yes you read that correctly, is home to La Calabria.
I say lost purely because a section of the shopping centre has been torn down and replaced by a tall building which abuts Wanneroo Road. It’s so close to the edge its alarming. It doesn’t really matter what it’s going to house, all that is concerning is a nice shopping centre is now aesthetically unpleasant.
But I digress, lets talk food. La Calabria have a large Wood Fired oven and, believe it or not, Pizza is available all day. That’s my sort of place.
I ordered a Margherita Pizza which looked fabulous but the base was a bit of a let down. A bit too chewy with a dull bite while the sauce was pretty great.
The venue is fully licensed and there is a fabulous dessert cabinet. There is also a wide variety of pasta dishes to eat in or take away.
Opted for a take home spinach and ricotta ravioli and while the ravioli was actually very appealing, the sauce was overpowering. The sauce had pesto, red peppers, sun dried tomatoes and a couple of other things. Way too rich for my palate and I decided to ask for the dish next time with sauce on the side. Very Harry Met Sally.
Visually, the view from my table was of an aisle in a mall with light grey walls and semi colourful shop fronts. And, that construction which blocked out the sun a bit. Of course, that will change.
So, the venue itself is well thought out and has a very comfortable feel to it. Plus, the bonus of being able to enjoy a glass of wine with your lunch or dinner.
