Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne … Charlies Fresh Food Market in Morley has been around since 1964. It has undergone a couple of name changes and one building change since then. But, at heart, it’s still that same corner deli.

Charlies Fresh Food Market

I first stumbled across Charlies when I went looking for good parmesan cheese in Morley. I had moved into the surrounding area and my old cheese shop was a little too far to travel. I found Charlies Fresh Food Market quite by accident.

Yeah, the place was pretty impressive. A large cheese section, fresh pasta, olives, coffee, Italian chocolates, Gelato etc. I could go on but don’t need to. Charlies was just like the Re Store only in Morley.

I found my Parmesan cheese and then some.

They had a large variety of take home meals. I spotted the Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne and put one in my basket. But there was also a meaty lasagne and a variety of other pasta dishes. There were various pasta sauces to go with their fresh pasta. Available behind the Deli Counter. Not a red meat eater but the Bolognese looked very rich and appetising.

I also found they had San Marzano tinned tomatoes. And, buffalo mozzarella. Two ingredients down for my pizza creations at home.

Charlies have a café at the front of the Market. Where they serve great coffee, cakes, rolls and pastries. The rolls are continental extravaganzas. Think Panini with red peppers, eggplant, salad and provolone cheese. Yum.

The complex includes an award winning Bakery, a Butcher, Dolce & Salato Pizzeria Patisserie and an upmarket Bottle Shop. No candlestick maker though.

Oh, and a word about that spinach and ricotta lasagne I took home. Sensational. It was just like Nona used to make.
