Ayam Mercon … Don’t know how I’ve missed Monggo Restaurant as I frequent the area quite a bit. But there it was nestled next to the hardware store and Hanami Japanese on Beaufort Street.
Always excited to try a new place so I checked out the lunch specials. Everything sounded really excellent, so off we went.
Settled on Ayam Mercon which consisted of lightly battered chicken breast pieces, julienne carrots, green beans and onions. It had been tossed through a Wok with a spicy Padang sauce and served with rice. The sauce was extra spicy, like kapow, hit your palate running type spicy. For me, this dish was just about perfect. Add that it had a price tag of $8.90 for the lunch special and they had me at hello. Ayam Mercon will definitely be on my lunch list from now on.
Looking at the rest of the menu though I would particularly like to try the Rijstaffel, which they are billing at $39 per couple. It seems to be a selection of the food but at a very good price.
Monggo Restaurant bill themselves as a Fusion Restaurant. This is because their Chef combines a few different Indonesian cuisines into his dishes. The purists seem to think this is okay because the place is quite popular. They have even been selected as a Gold Plate Award Finalist.
The restaurant is decorated as uniquely Indonesian, with artefacts and paintings everywhere. It’s a small place but it’s charming. There are small touches to the decor which add to the overall theme, like the Batik patches on the back of the chairs.
September 2016 Update:
So, we visit Monggo Restaurant for lunch often and their Ayam Mercon has never disappointed.
