Finally eating at The Merrywell … Xena has surprised me with the offer of breakfast out and we are quite excited about being here. We’re greeted with a happy hello and a friendly face, told to sit anywhere and to order our food at the bar.
The place is gorgeous, the décor is a little sombre but funky as well, you can hear the bustle of the casino and there are suits all around us.
The menu is limited but there are a few things that stand out. Xena orders an omelette and for me it’s the Huevos Rancheros. We both order a hot drink.
When the drinks arrive we are awed by their size … about twice the size of a normal coffee. Xena was happy with her hot chocolate but sadly my cappuccino was disguised as a latte, the cap art was blurry because it had been spilled and the coffee tasteless.
My food, when it deigns to appear, accosts my eyes with a series of “that looks okay” highs and “no wait, kill me now” lows. Let me explain, I have eaten Huevos Rancheros many times and was looking forward to soft tortillas and tomatoey eggs. But what was put in front of me looked like nachos. There were two terribly fried sunny side up eggs. Something black and goopy (the black beans but refried and then put under a grill I’d say). Half an avocado, various salsas and a mountain of corn chips (which had an overpowering cheesy taste going on). Persevering and trying to work out just how to eat this was a task in itself.
When the wait person asked how everything was I explained that it was less than. This lady was very good at her job and pleasant to be around, she went off to speak to the Chef. On her return we were told his response was he would make another plate (seriously?), or perhaps offer a free coffee? No mention of taking the food off the bill. And, with the state of the dish that’s what should have happened. P.S. Xena’s omelette was fine and what I should have ordered.
