Tan Po Po Japanese Tea House, 623 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley, Phone 9328 8313.
No Frills, Simple Home Cooked Fare … Was pointed at this little Tea House on Beaufort Street and pushed in their direction. A friend said if you want tasty Japanese at a good price then try Tan Po Po. So I did.
It’s an unassuming little café, it is also tiny and kind of dim with loads of salads in the display cabinet. There is a fairly open commercial kitchen at the back and a nice Terrace with a few tables overlooking Beaufort Street. Assorted tables inside and a water Station in one corner. The Ritz it ain’t but it was comfortable and had the bare necessities.
It was also very busy and I watched in awe as many many meals were churned out in the 20 minutes I was there. Basically, this place is pay at the counter, take a number, find a seat and go pick up your meal when your number is called.
My Teriyaki Chicken with Rice arrived with a tiny salad and a total cost of $6.70. Yep, you read that correctly. The Chicken Fillet was very well cooked, tender and juicy. Also, the sushi rice was covered in the salty goodness of the Teriyaki Sauce.
This was a well rounded and appetising lunch.
Tan Po Po’s menu includes Karaage Chicken, Ramen Soups, Bento Boxes and Sushi. Most of all, the food is exceptionally well priced and, as a result, attracts many customers.
I’ve heard stories about their Ramen, apparently it is amazing, so we’ll be back to try it definitely.
Tan Po Po closed it’s doors in September 2016.
A very similar Sushi place has opened in its place.
