Petition Kitchen, State Buildings, Corner St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street, Perth WA 6000, Phone 6168 7771.

A Little Slice of History … Petition Kitchen is housed in a building that has been around since 1878. One of a set of State Buildings that have been extensively renovated. This one fronts the Terrace and Barrack Street. Back in the day Petitioners would march down the Terrace to submit their Petitions while lobbying for their causes.

The building is now home to a number of food and drink related enterprises. Most noteworthy are Petition Kitchen, The Beer Corner and the Petition Wine Bar. Also relevant are Long Chim’s Thai Restaurant and Sue Lewis Chocolatier. With more interesting vendors on their way it seems.

So, Xena and I decided to try Petition Kitchen for breakfast. Because it seemed rude not to try the Restaurant everyone is raving about.

Loved the feel of the place right from the moment we entered. Very impressive. They have stripped back the floorboards, the ceiling and parts of the walls. Kept the sash windows and original features. It’s been done with care and passion.

A staff member met us at the door and led us to a table. They returned shortly after with menus and water. All three of the wait staff we dealt with were charming.

Food wise there was an eclectic selection. Not your run of the mill eggs on toast here. Xena opted for Pikelets, Banana, Burnt Maple, Pecan and Whipped Crème. While I ventured out of my comfort zone and ordered the Confit Ocean Trout Salad, Peas, Spring Onions, Croute and Egg.

Xena’s dish was picture perfect and they had swapped the Pecans for Blueberries. Bonus. She was very pleased with her choice.

My Trout Salad was enormous. I tasted the Trout Confit and it was delicious. The Croutes were scattered through the peas and had the most delicious flavour. Then I noticed some black specks and knew it was probably Black Salt because I’d been served it once before. It shook up the palate that’s for sure. Juicy Peas, spring onions, sprouts and herbs made for a great, fresh tasting Salad. Excellent. Oh, and the egg was amazing. Yet, I could not finish the dish, so much food.

Great venue, admirable staff and excellent food. All good.
