Mrs S Highgate – Coffee Bar – Brunch

Hit the Road Jack … Fronted up to Side Door BBQ in Highgate. But it was not my lucky day as their BBQ Chicken was still a long way from completion. Not a problem really but a little sad that there was to be no BBQ for me.

Consulted the wish list on my phone and decided on Mrs S, a café I’d been wanting to visit for a while. It’s the sister Café to Mrs S in Maylands and has only been open a couple of months. The space is a little larger than Maylands because there is an outdoor area as well as indoor seating.

The building is really old and has a lot of character, like wooden floors, exposed brick walls etc. It’s really attractive and comfy looking.

On the food front there wasn’t a lot on the menu that sparked my interest, because, BBQ. Finally settled on a Croque Madame, minus the Ham. The obligatory cappuccino was purchased as well.

The toasted sandwich was oozing some decent Emmenthal Cheese and had a nice smear of Dijon. There was a small side salad of leafy greens, with a citrus dressing, and a dollop of good spicy chutney. The bread was fairly decent sour dough. But to be honest my brain went into rote mode and I just ate without a lot of enthusiasm.

The cappuccino was possibly not the best. It was barely lukewarm, and was stone cold within a few minutes. There was a weird taste going on with the Milk. Not sure, but it was just left after a few sips.

The staff seemed distracted. Service wasn’t bad, it’s just that there was no real engagement. They were too busy doing what they were doing. Will make a return visit in a few months, a little harsh to judge them in their first few weeks.
