Tuck Shop Lunch … Long Chim and Chef David Thompson burst onto the scene late last year. And, the awards started rolling in shortly afterwards. The focus of the Restaurant is Thai Street Food. Long Chim means “to come sample and taste”. And, after finding out that they had opened a Tuck Shop offering lunch specials, I made my way to the City.

Colorful Courtyard

Bohemian is a word I would use to describe the Long Chim venue. It’s located in the vaulted Basement of the recently renovated Petition Building in Cathedral Square. The entrance is out-of-the-way, you wouldn’t get there by accident.

On my arrival at the bottom of the stairs I was mesmerised by the décor.

The Bar

Walking past the sophisticated Bar and Restaurant I made my way to the Courtyard where the Tuck Shop is located.

And, wow, just wow, such a great space, with parasols and bright cushions, food carts and the rustic staircase. You could almost imagine you were at a Thai Street vendor. And, indeed, that is the whole concept in a nutshell. It’s brilliant.

But, I digress, back to the food. The Tuck Shop specials for the day were five curries. Pork, Beef, Pumpkin, Cabbage and my choice of the Green Curry with Fish Balls, Thai Basil and Kaffir Lime.

While waiting for the food, I poured myself some water into a tin cup (such attention to detail) and served up a small plate of fresh chillies.

When the server put the plate of food in front of me the aromas were out of the park. Such a beautiful aromatic smell. And, that first taste didn’t disappoint either. The food was as good as it’s olfactory promise. The curry came with perfectly cooked rice. Big fan of those house made Fish Balls as well. Lovely Grub.

Possibly, my favourite dining experience this year. The staff were great, the food was fabulous and the décor was right up my Street.

Pssst. Noticed a sign on the Terrace “Long Chim Take Away Coming Soon”.
