Hey Mambo, Mambo Italiano … Just to get you in the mood and thinking Italian. No Menu 448 is breaking the rules and serving up some delicious plates of food.
I sat down with the owner and Perth restaurateur, Maurizio Di Ciano. A charming Man who is happy they decided to go for something a little more casual with this venue. In fact, there’s not a white table cloth in sight.
Another insight mentioned by Maurizio was his love of shopping for the best produce he could find. A lot of chefs will do that but this man loves his food and knows what he wants to see coming out of the kitchen. Attention to detail like this is the difference between good and wow.
So, how does it work. From $50.00 a person your table will fill up with a selection of the day’s fresh pasta, pizza and other items. It took me a while to get my head around the idea but I see the value now.
Unable to do justice to a huge amount of food, I just ordered an eggplant Parmigiana. And, like magic, a few small plates of sides appeared on the table, like olives, fresh chillies and some of the best bread ever. I kid you not, I would return just to eat this bread.
A short while later a plate of salmon Carpaccio marinated with oranges and tomato appeared on the table. I had never tasted anything like this, the citrus and the salmon together were fabulous. Obviously I hadn’t tried Carpaccio before.
and wow, that bread.
So, I spent some time just eating as there was quite a bit to get through. Thought the parmesan on the Parmigiana was brilliant and the eggplant was cooked really well but it was the sauce that stood out. Delicious.
The wood fired pizza oven, left behind by former tenants Ace Pizza, will certainly be getting a work out from No Menu 448.
