New Kid on the Block – Well, a new kid on Angove Street that’s for sure. The Old Laundry owners have taken a grand old building and made it even grander.
The renovation is absolutely stunning, with the wooden floorboards, immense polished wooden bar and eclectic tables and chairs. There are huge sliding doors which bring the outside in. The Old Laundry has an air about it and it was a pleasure to sit down and inhale the surrounds. Really like the Patio at the rear of the building, it’s quite big and features a large train engine.
On stepping inside the Cafe, we were greeted almost immediately by a smiling waiter. The service continued to be friendly and efficient throughout our visit.
So, the food was thoroughly enjoyable. We shared Grilled Haloumi with Orange Pieces on Croutes (mini toast), Grilled Squid Salad and Hand Cut Fries.
Most notable were the little extras touches added to these plates that made them special. The Cheese came with Caper Berries which added a great little burst of flavour.
There was a small portion of Quinoa and Broccoli Tabouleh that came with the Squid, also a nice treat. And, the Chips were greatly enhanced by the Aioli and the Basque dressing.
Xena, who can never go past dessert, ordered Churros with Orange, Saffron and Chocolate Ganache. The smile on her face was enough to let me know they were delicious. And, on tasting the Ganache I decided it was amazing and went so well with the crunchy Spanish donuts.
The Old Laundry was buzzing when we were there, as it had just opened. The place was packed but everyone seemed happy It’s a grand addition to the Angove Street eateries.
So, even though the building is quite old, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that it has been Heritage Listed. Which seems a shame really, as it’s a beautiful old building.
