Home style fare … Went to try Brick Lane’s lunch specials and discovered the restaurant empty. But we were soon joined by other people and the atmosphere improved. Our table looked out over the pavement to the bustle of Newcastle Street and Carr Place.

There were four lunch specials to choose from, we ordered fish cakes and barramundi curry. Unfortunately, the fish cakes weren’t available but we were offered potato cakes in their place. This turned out to be a fabulous plate of food, crunchy panko breadcrumbs and spicy potatoes mixed with cabbage, garlic and onions. Sort of like bubble and squeak but really spicy.

The barramundi curry was full of firm white fish pieces in a great spicy sauce and came with rice and dhal. This was good home style cooking and the spices were spot on. Looking over the a la carte menu made me think it was a little pricey, on a par with Two Fat Indians in Highgate. But saying that, the food was really good, so Xena and I will venture back some time in the future.

The décor of Brick Lane is charming, with a mural of the original Brick Lane in London adorning two walls. The wooden tables and chairs were enhanced by the white cushion on the seat. Swirly carpets gave the place a sense of fun. It is a very large Restaurant but there is definitely a sense of spaciousness.

The staff were curously absent for most of our visit. We had water and food, so we were fine. It’s just such a big venue that it was odd no staff were on the floor. There were a few full tables, some of which wanted water. Nobody around but us chickens.
