But first, just a bit of History. Kuehs (sweets) are also known as Nyona kuehs (often spelt as Nonya). They originated from descendants of 15th century Chinese Traders who came to the Malay Archipelago. These Chinese assimilated with the local communities and are called Peranakans.
The sweets are eaten as snacks throughout the day. And, they form an integral part of Malaysian and Singaporean festivities and everyday life.
Love just about all the Nonya cakes but the Ketayap is one of my favourites. A Ketayap is a green pandan crepe with coconut and palm sugar filling.
Delicious Bites also sell Indonesian Layer Cake. I was in awe at the number of layers and the thinness of each layer. It would suggest to me it is a major achievement to construct this cake. And, it’s another favourite for me.
There is also a selection of gluten free cakes which are made from glutinous rice flour. A different texture to western style cakes but deliciously chewy.
