A Grand Old Dame … Rushed up Old Perth Road to meet a friend for a drink at the Bassendean Hotel. But I had to pause and take a moment to appreciate the grandeur of this classic old hotel. Oh, and take a photo, of course.

The Grand Old Dame of Old Perth Road

The Bassendean Hotel has been exstensively refurbished and definitely looks the part with the wrap around verandah seating. On entering the hotel I wasn’t disappointed with the inside décor either, think wooden floors and furniture.

My friend and I sat quietly chatting and appreciating some lovely Bambini Prosecco from the “Basso’s” rather grand wine list. Which was refreshing to read, as there were many wines available by the glass.

We had a small plate of herbed garlic bread to sop up the alcohol. The bread was crunchy, garlicky and herby, just what was needed. I will definitely be back to try the food properly because browsing the menu there were a few dishes that had my name on them.

Even though the Bassendean Café strip is quite small it is perfectly formed. It had me thinking that the suburb was beating Bayswater in the cafe numbers game.

So, Sunday mornings would be a good time to head down to Bassendean to visit the Markets. The Old Perth Markets operate from 9.00am to 1.30pm and I feel duty bound to point out that they would end just in time for lunch at the Hotel.

History:
The Bassendean Hotel was built circa 1898 and has historical significance as a venue for hunting parties in the early 1900’s. The Hotel was Heritage Listed in 1988 in Heritage Place 00133.
