So I Turned Myself To Face Me … And, I said, self, it’s time you followed advice and tried Gochujang Chicken. A US Blogger friend of mine suggested I try this Korean Fried Chicken. Never having heard of it I was surprised when Google came up with many places in Perth that sell this dish.
Choosing Chimek in Northbridge was an easy decision. It had a whole swag of good reviews and it’s a Beer bar as well.
Striding down James Street gave me a very different view to what I was used to. So many new buildings and renovations. But old favourites like Connections are still there. Things change fast around here.
Chimek is a tiny little café, with outdoor and indoor seating. They have a large bar with buckets full of icy beer. The staff are very organised and everything went just like clockwork.
Ordered, paid, collected a number and took a seat. Food and Water were presented a short while later. But in the meantime I’d been enjoying the Korean Pop Music Videos on the big screen TV. Not too loud but definitely interesting. Until Jay z and yeezy came on and I lost interest for a bit.
Oh my, the Korean Fried Gochujang Chicken placed in front of me looked absolutely amazing. The coating on the chicken looked so crunchy, the sauce was dark, rich and chilli red and there were crushed peanuts scattered over the entire dish.
Could not wait to get into the food but noticed there was a pair of surgical gloves on the table. Looking around I could see that everyone was wearing them to eat their Chicken on the bone. I had ordered boneless but decided to wear the gloves anyway. Sticky, sweet, spicy and delicious sauce you can’t get me now.
Let me just say that the first bite of that chicken was overpowering. All those different flavours hit the palate running. Excellent.
The chicken came with a side of Beer Battered Chips and radish chunks. This was a great meal. One that won’t be repeated regularly, because, fried. But one I’m going to be thinking about a lot for a while to come.
Total cost $16.00. No beer, just tap water.
