Cacophony Central … It’s alarming when you first step through the door of Galangal Thai Cuisine in Mount Hawthorn. The acoustics, or lack of, means the place is high maintenance on the ear drums. But, like everything, after a while you stop noticing and just start enjoying the food, the service and the company you are keeping.
Galangal is producing some beautiful and delicious food.
We were there for a large family gathering and ended up sharing dishes around. A nice way to try food you might normally not order. Galangal’s “Galloping Horses” is a fine example of that. Minced Duck, ground Shrimp and crushed Cashews served on small pieces of pineapple, with a wham bam spicy sauce. Yum.
Xena and I ordered Stir Fried Chicken Breast with Cashews and Chilli Jam. And, Sweet Chilli Silken Tofu. Both dishes were awesome. As was the Jasmine rice.
There was a Beef Massaman Curry, which we didn’t try, a Pad Thai which we did. The Chicken and Chilli Basil Stir Fry just kind of disappeared, as did our Stir Fry. Both were so good.
The Restaurant has been redecorated because it used to be the home of ilPasto, who still run their Inglewood Restaurant but bowed out of Mount Hawthorn. And, the new furnishings are elaborate and charming.
Must say that the wine list was jolly, loads of wine by the glass. A good selection from moderately priced through to expensive.
The wait staff were awesome. There is no other word to describe their attentiveness and delivery. Plates were cleared promptly, water refilled, food delivered, drinks replenished. Nothing was forgotten. And, smiles were plentiful.
Galangal Thai Cuisine would probably set you back $120.00 for two for 2 courses and a drink. But they definitely step up to the mark for food, service and atmosphere.
